Hello Flyer Parents,
Welcome to the first full week of school! It's been a nice time getting to know your students. They are completely delightful, and I'm happy to be their teacher. Math- We are starting with the Reflex Cup in the next few days. Reflex is a program that helps students learn their math facts from 0-12 addition and subtraction to 0-12 multiplication and division. It is the 4th grade team's goal to have all the students finished with Reflex by November...just in time for double digit multiplication. We will be offering a great competition and a party at the end for all students who complete Reflex. Expect to hear more about this from your student. We are starting a review of place value and rounding this week and next week. Language Arts- Today, I gave the students the homework assignment to write their words in the "Spelling List" section of their planners. I am only testing on the first 10 words from the "Because of Winn-Dixie" spelling words this week. We also have baseline assessments this week, so I don't want to overload some students with too many words. I do all of my spelling and vocabulary tests on Spelling City. It is a fantastic resource that makes learning fun. Of course, the story selection we will be reading is "Because of Winn-Dixie". All of the story selections and spelling words can be found on the Language Arts tab under Utah History- We started our first unit in Utah History with a lesson in latitude and longitude. We will be using coordinates to find different locations in America and in the world. Science- This term, we will be learning about how the different elevations in Utah affect the plants and animals that can survive there. We will also be learning about adaptations, as well as the desert, wetland, and mountain regions of our great state. Please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions or comments. I'm always happy to help. Have a great week!

Hello and welcome to a new school year! I am really looking forward to working with your students. Hopefully, you've been able to find your way around this site. I've spent quite a bit of time this summer adding to the functionality of my website so that parents and students will have the resources that they need to have a great year. Of course, if there's a question that can't be answered here, you can always email me or send a message on Class Dojo. For my first post of the year, let's get everything ready for Back to School Night, and the first few days of school. Most 4th grade students love to take part in their preparations for school, so get them involved. :)
Directions for Back to School Night: If you have consulted the class supply lists, you'll see that the 4th grade team asked all parents to provide 1 red plastic folder with prongs and pockets, and 1 royal blue plastic folder with prongs and pockets, as well as 6 heavy duty page protectors. The red folder will be your student's homework folder, and the blue folder will be used to store your student's information for Student-Led Conferences. 1- Red Folder- Please insert 5 of the pocket protectors and bring the folder to BTSN. There, we can tape a special "Homework Folder" label on it and I will have ready some numbered reference sheets that will stay in the folder all year. 2- Blue Folder- Please insert 1 pocket protector and bring the folder to BTSN. You may have your student write his/her name on both of the folders in the lower left-hand corner with Sharpie. I will have Sharpies available in my class if you don't have one at home. Both folders will go into your student's desk. 3- Personal Desk Supplies- 4th graders are old enough to have some desk supplies in their own pencil case or Ziploc bag. Your student can use some of the supplies that you may have purchased for their own pencil case. The following should be labeled with student's name in Sharpie. I will have replacements for students throughout the year, but students who consistently lose supplies will be asked to bring more from home. *Safety Scissors *1 Black Sharpie Marker *3 Sharpened Pencils (keep 3 in pencil pouch at all times) *1 Glue Stick *1 Pack of Colored Pencils (take out of the box) *1 Expo Marker *1 Highlighter *1 small sock or piece of cloth (for whiteboard erasing) *Opt. A small manual pencil sharpener 4- Sign Up for Class Dojo- Class Dojo is a fantastic communication tool that enables us to communicate quickly and easily. When something interesting is happening in class, I will post pictures in Class Stories, and I can use the app to send quick photos and messages directly to you. I will have your student's class dojo code sheet ready for you. Make sure that you get the sheet with your child's name on it and get set up that night. 5- Distribution of Supplies- I will have labeled bins set up around my room where things that don't go in the personal pen case can be distributed. That's it! I really appreciate your help before school begins. The first few days of school are great for building relationships within the classroom and settling into a fun and relaxed routine. Having everything ready really makes the transition easier. I can't wait to meet you all next Monday, August 19, from 5-7. I hope that your last few days of summer vacation are wonderful. |
