Hello Flyer Parents,
Welcome to another fantastic week in the 4th grade. We have some fun things planned for this week. The Loveland Living Planet Aquarium will be visiting our school tomorrow to make a presentation entitled, “The Wonders of the Water Cycle.” Make sure that your students are here on time so they don’t miss anything. In math, we are continuing our work on customary measurements. We have learned about length, capacity, weight, and tomorrow we will be focusing on time. Later in the week we will be learning about line plots, and the test will follow. If your student is still working on his or her ALEKS 4th grade pie, please know that 100% completion is expected by 5/3, in order to receive full credit. I’ll be emailing parents in the next week to let them know how close their students are to completion. This is so exciting to me!! Great job! In language arts, the story selection is a play. I will be dividing the students into groups and they will be performing the play throughout the week within those groups. We will be focusing on generalizations in literature, and whether those generalizations are valid, or faulty. We will also be working hard on understanding context clues. The spelling words for most students contain the suffixes -ful, -ly, -ion. Spelling lists will be coming home today. In history, we are learning about how the pioneers settled the Salt Lake Valley. We will also continue to prepare for the final test of the term, The Great Utahn Award. Please note that the annual 4th grade program will be on 5/24 from 11:50-12:50 (approximately) in the theatre. In science, we will be continuing our studies of Utah’s Biomes. We will be talking specifically about desert elevation, plants, and animals. Have a great week. Please email or message me with any questions or concerns.

Welcome Back! I hope that you all had a wonderful break with your families! It's been fun to hear about the adventures that some of you had on your travels. It's also nice to know that some of you just had a chance to relax and enjoy yourselves at home. :)
This week in math, we started the chapter on customary measurement. Did you know that the USA is one of only 3 countries in the world to use customary measurement? Luckily, we will also be practicing the metric system, so the students will have an idea of how the rest of the world measures. Many students were a little confused about using a ruler to find measurements to the nearest 1/2" and 1/4", so be prepared to see that this afternoon after school. In language arts we are reading a story selection entitled "When Tia Lola Came to Stay". The question of the week for this text is: "How can one person's view of the world affect others?" The class and I had a great conversation about being open-minded about the cultures and tradition of people from different countries. The students had some very interesting insights about times they themselves had visited another country, or had family members from other countries. (I shared an experience I had in China, where the only bathroom available was a converted school bus that had holes bored through the floor. This story gained too much traction, and I'm sorry if you heard about it at home today!) This week we will be focusing on story sequence and comma usage. The students will also be writing and performing a skit on Wednesday or Thursday. In History, we continued with our County Reports. The students have the specific directions in their Utah History folders, but if you'd like to see the details for yourselves, the pages can be found here. These reports will be due on 5/20, and the students will be presenting their reports to the class on Monday and Wednesday of that week. The reports will then be on display at the History Fair on 5/23. This project is one of those 4th grade things that everyone remembers fondly. In science, we are continuing our study of ecosystems and habitats. Tomorrow, we will be doing an activity that highlights the importance of each member of any given habitat's food chain. *Important* Coming up this Friday, we will be having our World Book Day class party. Before the break, I sent out a signup sheet with a few items that we could use for the party. I only had a few people sign up, so would you please take a look and see if there's anything you might be able to provide? We will definitely need some volunteers for this party since all three of our room moms are unavailable that day. The party has been planned and many supplies taken care of by Mrs. Dansie, but we need parents to help run the stations. Thanks!! Thanks, and I hope you have a great week! As always, I'm always available via email or Class Dojo. Hello Everyone, It's the final week before Spring Break! We've got a great week planned. Here are some of the details. In math, we took the ch. 10 test today. I was very pleased with the students' performance! Overall, the class averaged 89%. Thank you for the help you've given your students at home. Tomorrow and Wednesday, we will be reviewing chapters 7-1o in preparation for the 3rd Benchmark test. That's a lot of math to review, but after sending practice tests home each day last week, I think they're going to do well. Chapter 11 begins customary measurement, so that will be an interesting change from all the fractions and decimals. :) In language arts, we're reading a story selection about Jim Thorpe, football star and American Olympian. We will be reviewing fact and opinion in literature and the spelling words use the prefixes mis-, non-, re-, and pre-. We will also be practicing multiple-meaning words for vocabulary. It's time to buckle in and encourage your student to study for the Great Utahn Test. Students who score 100% on this test (including spelling) will receive a special award at the 4th grade program. Link Here There are some important scheduling items coming up. Make sure to check this link so that you make the necessary arrangements. Finally, our class will be having a World Book Day party on April 26th. That's the Friday after Spring Break. Here is a link to a Google signup sheet for some items to help out with the food and supplies. Thank you!! Thanks, and have a great week. Welcome to April! I hope the start of your spring season has been wonderful. Tomorrow is Spring Picture Day, and as such, every student is entitled to free dress, even if he or she is not getting pictures taken. :) In language arts, we will be reading a story about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., written by his sister. We will be talking about the equal rights movement, and how we can further the cause of equal rights in our society today. We will be revisiting cause and effect in literature, and focusing on conjunctions and the schwa. You'll notice the schwa sounds in most of the students' spelling lists. In math, we will finish up with chapter 10, which deals with fractions and decimals. This chapter has been a welcome diversion from all of the tough fraction concepts we did in chapter 9, and it's been fun to have the students say, "This is easy!" The ch. 10 test will be given at the end of this week. We are also reviewing for the 3rd math benchmark test (covers chapters 7-10), which will be given next week. I wanted to let you know that at the end of Term 3, 98% of my class has completed at least 75% of their ALEKS 4th grade coursework! The expectation for the end of the year is 100%. Keep up the good work, and make sure that your students are doing a little ALEKS each day to receive full credit for Term 4. In science, my students will start my rotation on Utah's animals and biomes. We'll be learning about Utah's elevations, animal adaptations, deserts, wetlands, and forests. Finally, for history, we will be studying for the Great Utahn Award. Students can find a study guide for the Great Utahn Award in their red homework folders as well as here. If students get 100% on this test (including spelling), they will receive a certificate at our annual 4th grade program. I will have a specific date for that program soon, but for now, know that it will be held on a Friday towards the end of March in the Theatre. The students will be singing songs, and playing their recorders. Have a fantastic week! |
