Hello Flyer Parents-
Welcome to Spirit Week! This week is one of the students’ favorites, and a great tradition here at Early Light Academy. Last week, we wrote in our planners about how to dress and what to do for each day. Today we wore red and talked about the dangers of drug use. I would like to thank Amy Dansie for decorating our door in a “be drug free” theme. This week in language arts we are reading about America’s past presidents. We will be learning about how our government works and talk in general terms about the upcoming midterm elections. I don’t think it’s an accident that this story selection occurs at the end of October each year. Please keep up the good work with Lexia usage. I got an email from our reading specialist, Anna Lynn today. She encouraged the 4th grade to strive to get 90-100% completion, where we have been achieving 80-90%. Please, please monitor your student’s Lexia minutes, especially of they have 80 mins./week to complete. It will make a difference in their ability to read, comprehend, and enjoy reading. This week in math we are starting the multiplication lessons that will turn into 2 and 3 digit multiplication that we all learned in 4th grade. With that in mind, please encourage your student to complete his/her Reflex addition and subtraction level and move on to the multiplication and division level. Honestly, there is nothing more important to future math success than knowing those multiplication facts! I hate seeing students left behind because they are counting on their fingers or checking a chart to know that 7x6=42. The students will be taking a final science benchmark tomorrow in Mrs. Nelson’s class, and then starting a new rotation on Soil and Fossils with Mrs. Groendyke this Thursday. In history, we learned about Lake Bonneville and how the remnants of Lake Bonneville remain in the Great Salt Lake, Utah Lake and Sevier Lake. Next Wednesday, we will be making salt dough maps of Utah. I will be asking each student to bring in an 8x10 piece of sturdy cardboard with their names on the back. I will also be sending a recipe for salt dough, as well as posting it on this site. These topographical maps of Utah are a real tradition, and I love doing them. Last, if you would like to order a class t-shirt, the deadline to get your order in is 10/31. Originally I said 10/30, but since I am so late posting this update (I was carving pumpkins with family tonight!), we'll make it Wednesday. Have a great week!

Hello Flyer Parents! I hope that you had a fantastic week off! My family and I went to the Colorado Plateau region of Utah (aka Moab and Cortez, Colorado). We went to Arches National Park and then we saw the Anasazi cliff dwellings in Mesa Verde National Park. It was a blast, but I actually looked forward to getting back onto a schedule. Students came home with a new spelling list today. I was seriously impressed with the scores from the tests from the 12th, so keep up the great work at home! Also, please make sure that your students are completing their Lexia minute requirements. We work on Lexia during our language arts block, so most of your students will finish their minutes here at school. However, some of my students have an 80 minute requirement, and that will require time at home to reach the goal. Also, Lexia is amazing and can only help your student, so I'm totally fine with extra minutes. Book reports are due this Thursday, with no late work permitted since it's the end of the term. Here is the link . I have also provided the book report pages at school, if they weren't printed out at home. We will be taking a math benchmark on chapters 1-3 this Wednesday. Our class average for our chapter 3 test taken on 10/12 was 87%, so I was thrilled with that. Keep going with ALEKS and Reflex at home! Next week is Red Ribbon week. I had the students write down the themes for each of the days. Please remember that on 10/31, the students are to dress as a book character, and must bring or make a book to support their outfit. That same day, we will be having our Fall Festival class party from 1:30-3. It will be a time for pumpkin cookies and other fall games to celebrate this wonderful autumn season. We have a small sign-up sheet for a couple of items needed for the party if you'd like to help out. We also need a couple of parent volunteers. Click here for the link. A word about the class t-shirt order. Shirts are $10, payable to the office (not to me). A sign up sheet came home today with directions on how to order a shirt. They are really cute, and the students can wear them on spirit dress days, as well as on field day next spring. The final day to turn in your order is 10/30. Please make sure to send the order forms along with the $, making sure to specify your child's shirt size. Thanks! I think that's enough for now. As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. I really care about each of my students, and I want to know about anything that will help them have a wonderful 4th grade year. Hello Everyone,
The air is getting colder and we're getting closer to the end of Term 1. I've had some parents inquiring about the doodle book report that is due on 10/25 If you would like a reminder, here is a link. On Tuesday, we are going to This is the Place for our first field trip. There are a few parents who still haven't signed the google forms permission slip in order for your student to attend. Please remember to dress your student according to the weather, and send a sack lunch (unless you have arranged for a school sack lunch). The spelling words will be available on Spelling City tomorrow, and I'll send home a hard copy tomorrow, as well. I'll also be sending home the graded spelling tests so you can adjust your student's study schedule to include a little more spelling work, if necessary. Many of you may have noticed that your students' Lexia minutes have increased or decreased. There are some students who have 80 minutes/week to complete and some who have 20 or less/week. Because of Lexia, we have already seen some excellent data from the beginning of the year to now, so I would encourage all parents to take their student's weekly minute requirements seriously and make sure they are completed by Friday each week. If you have any questions or concerns, please email or send a Dojo message. If you'd like to see specifics about what we are learning this week, please click here. Have a great week! |
