Hello Flyer Parents,
Welcome to a new week. It's so nice to have spring in the air! Spring Fever is officially here and we're all excited. However, we are still going to pack the next 2 months FULL of learning. :) In language arts, our story selection is a Science Fiction story about living on the moon. We will be continuing our work on context clues, and drawing conclusions. As you can see from the spelling list, we are studying related words. Thank you to all of you who worked with your students on the Biography Book Reports. They are fantastic, and I was filled with such delight seeing the students act as their characters. In math, we will be starting a new chapter tomorrow. Chapter 10 deals with fractions and decimals. The fantastic news is that the class average for the ch. 9 test was 87%. There were 14 students above 90%! Keep up the good work. As they revisit long division, fractions, multiplication, etc. in higher grades, most of these students will be ready to grasp more complex concepts. We finished the Utah Pioneer simulation yesterday, and I think the students really enjoyed it. As we continue our Utah studies, we will be prepping for the Great Utahn Award. That is an award given at our upcoming 4th grade program, in which we will also be singing the Utah songs we've been practicing throughout the year. More info to come about that. This is the final week in Mrs. Meredith's science class. The students will be studying for, and taking the final exam for the term. Tanner Dance will be this Friday, and there will be a performance at the end of the year. Have a great week!

Hello Everyone,
Sorry I didn't get this out earlier, I was grading math quizzes and assignments. Thanks for your involvement in our STEM activity quiz challenge. We had 14 students from my class achieve 90% or higher on the 10 question quiz I gave this morning. Many students were in the 70%-80% range. Great job! In math, we will continue with fractions, and the test will be given some time this week. In language arts, we will be doing an autobiography about a woman who spends 4 months in Antarctica. The spelling words the students are learning have Latin roots. Their lists came home today. We will be focusing on main idea and text structure. We are also writing a really fun story about what would happen if a spaceship were to land in one's backyard. We have been doing a lot of technical writing, so this story form has been fun. This will be put into Utah Compose, and I'd like to see the students shoot for a grade of at least 25/30. I have been really impressed with the great writing my students have been doing. Information about biography book reports are HERE. And, when it's time to send me your student's video, please send it to this link on my Google Drive. Book reports are due on 3/25/19. In history, the student "families" have packed their wagons, purchased supplies, and we'll head out on our virtual trek across the plains tomorrow. It has been so fun to hear about what seems important to a 4th grader when purchasing supplies. I had to keep a straight face while one boy shared his concerns about how many jars of pickles his pioneer family might need while heading west. These are the things I love about working with kids! Mrs. Meredith's science class is wrapping up, and I'll have my own class for the 4th term rotation about Utah's biomes starting in April. One last thing, we will be starting Tanner Dance this Friday. Thanks for reading all the way to the end! Have a fantastic week! Hello Flyer Parents,
It's a short week! I hope you that you have some down time activities planned for the extra long weekend. Because it's a short week, we will not be doing a spelling list, but we will be doing a CCR test and vocabulary check on this week's story selection on Wednesday. This week's selection is entitled "Cliff Hanger". It's a realistic fiction story about a boy's rock climbing adventures. We will be focusing on character development, plot, and theme. Book reports are due on 3/25/19. More details about the book reports can be found here. In math, we have been working on operations with fractions. If you really want to help your students succeed, please help them practice simplifying (reducing) fractions. You can also really improve their chances in math by reviewing how to change improper fractions to proper fractions (this will involve a mixed number), and changing a mixed number into an improper fraction. I'm pleased with how hard the students are working, but my goodness, there's a lot to learn in 4th grade! We will continue our migration simulation this week. The students have been divided into families, and they will be stocking their figurative wagons and getting ready to embark. I think that's enough for this week. I hope you have a wonderful little break! Hello Flyer Parents,
Welcome to another great week! For language arts, we will be reading a story selection about the discovery of Machu Picchu. It is a biography, and we will be focusing on comparing and contrasting information and visualization while reading. The spelling words are double consonant, one sound words, and they will be coming home today in the red homework folders. This is the final week of a nationwide Lexia contest we have been in to be one of the top 7 classes in terms of Lexia minutes and topics gained. The winners get a $100 class pizza party! The students told me that there was no way they could compete, but I assured them that we can always do our best and maybe we’ll win! On an awesome note, our class had 100% completion of Lexia minutes by Thursday! Keep up the good work. We will be taking a test on ch. 8 in math tomorrow. Ch. 9 continues with adding and subtracting like fractions and mixed fractions, so that should be fairly simple for this group. Hopefully, we’ll finish that by the end of the week or early next week. Keep up the ALEKS and Reflex! In history, we’ll be starting a pioneer simulation exercise by putting the students into families. They will be working together to make decisions that determine whether or not they make it to the Salt Lake Valley...or not. The kids always love this, and you’ll probably be hearing about their families and new pioneer names. This Friday is the Rendezvous. Please make sure that your student has an costume and a craft to sell at the trading post. Here is a sign-up spreadsheet to help provide “vittles” for the day. FYI-Students will still be having lunch in the cafeteria, so the provided food will be a snack. Please send any volunteered items on Friday morning. The students took a Mastery Connect test on the water cycle last week. Mrs. Meredith has been working on getting them graded, and we’ll get them into ASPIRE as soon as possible. That’s about it for this post. I really love this class! They are kind to each other (most of the time), and they work hard in class and at home. They are fantastic kids, and I really enjoy my time with them each day. Please let me know if you have any questions, comments, or concerns. Have a great week! |
