Hello Flyer Parents!
Welcome to a new week. This week is student-led conferences, so if you'd still like to sign up for an appt., please click here. Since it is a short week, we won't be doing spelling or vocabulary lists. Instead, I have made two new lists on Spelling City that consist of possessive and personal pronouns, which we'll be working on this week. We will be doing a poetry unit about Haiku, as well as presenting our book reports, which were due last Friday. Also, please make sure that your student completes all of his or her Lexia minutes by Friday, so they can get their total points. Speaking of Lexia, Ella Simar, Alec Skillin, Rockwell Dansie, and Ezra Dansie have completed level 18, and have finished the course. Congratulations! In Math, we are working on Order of Operations. Today, I taught "PEMDAS" to the students as a memory device. Many of you will remember "Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally". It stands for Parentheses, Multiplication, Division, Addition and Subtraction, (work left to right). It's so exciting for me to see the students take their first steps into algebra, knowing that they will be using these tools for the rest of their lives. Please ask your students about their ALEKS completion. Each student should be at least at 50%, in order to finish their pie by the end of the year. They'll have some catch up to do if they're behind. In history we'll be going into more depth about Mountain Men in Utah, and the Mountain Man Rendezvous coming up on March 8. I will be providing more information about this 4th grade tradition in the coming weeks. Please remember that this Friday is a teacher work day and there will be no school. That's about all for this week. I'm really looking forward to seeing you this week at conferences.

Hello and welcome to another week! I hope that you had a nice Martin Luther King Jr. day! This week for language arts we will be reading about the pink dolphins found in Brazil in a story called Encantado. We will be focusing different types of pronouns as well as word choice in writing. The spelling list this week will be words with the schwa in the final syllable. Samuel Pettit finished Lexia, and there are many students who are moving along at a steady clip! My goal is to have as many students as possible complete Lexia before they move to 5th grade, and I think most of my students are within range to reach that goal. Book reports are due on 1/25. You may click here to print out instructions and pages. I will provide printouts at school for students who haven’t yet printed it starting on Tuesday.
In math we have moved from long division to patterns and sequences. Some of the story problems can be quite challenging, but for the most part, this chapter is a lot of fun and students seem to enjoy the number puzzles. Keep going with ALEKS and Reflex at home. Each student should be doing 15 minutes of math at home. There were a few more items that we wanted to teach in science this week, so we’ll begin a new rotation starting on Tuesday. My class will be with Mrs. Meredith, learning about weather and the water cycle. In history we’ll be moving from Native Americans to the Mountain Men that helped explore Utah. For those of you with children who have been in ELA’s 4th grade, you will know what I’m talking about when I say that the Mountain Man Rendezvous is coming on March 8. Much more information to come about this great 4th grade tradition. Lastly, here are some items that are coming up: Tuesday, 1/22-Museum on the Move is coming to do an in-school field trip focusing on animal adaptations. Next Friday, 1/25-Day in history focusing on Ancient Greece. Your student may dress in a costume or wear regular spirit dress. Students will be immersed in Greek history, art, mythology and architecture while they rotate amongst the 4th grade team. January 30-31-Winter conferences. Please sign up here. Have a great week! Please keep an eye on Aspire so your student doesn’t end up at the end of Term 3 with lots of missing assignments. It’s a lot easier to stay on top of homework. One last thing. This week is School Choice Appreciation Week. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for choosing Early Light Academy. We LOVE our Early Light families and students, and appreciate the choice you've made to send your students here for a great education. Have a great week!! Hello, We had a great week last week! It was hard for everyone to come back after the vacation, but we ended in full swing, and I feel like this next semester will be fantastic for everyone. This week, term 2 ends on Tuesday, 1/15. That is the same day that we will be on our field trip. :) I have had quite a few students come to me to find out what they are missing. As always, I suggest that they get on Aspire to see for themselves. Aspire is a fantastic tool and can be checked weekly. In fact, for my own children, I've set it up to generate reports to be emailed to me (daily for one child, and weekly for another...hahaha). This is a great time to get on Aspire and to go through red homework folders and backpacks to see if there is any missing work to turn in BY MONDAY. Speaking of the field trip, please make sure your student dresses for the cold, and either brings a lunch from home or if you've already ordered one, from ELA. I think it will be a fantastic day. In language arts, this week's story selection genre is mystery, and the students will be practicing visualization while reading, and comparing and contrasting things and situations in literature. We will be working on synonyms and antonyms, singular and plural pronouns, as well as expression and fluency in writing. The spelling words are contractions, which shouldn't be too difficult. Please note that the fantasy genre book reports are due on 1/25/19. Click here for all the information you need to know about the book report. We will begin chapter 7 in math this week. We will be focusing on patterns and sequences in math. We worked on Sierpinski Triangles on Friday, so I think that will tie right in with our new chapter. Our class completed the 4-6 benchmark test today. We have some work to do to get them corrected, but the score should be available sometime this week. In history, we will continue our work on the Great Utahn Award information, as well as continuing to memorize the 29 counties. If anyone would like to, here's a website that has a game the students have enjoyed playing. If you'd like the actual website, here it is: https://www.sporcle.com/games/captainchomp/click-the-utah-counties-map We will be rotating science teachers for the third time. My students will be learning about the water cycle and weather with Mrs. Meredith for Term 3. I think that's about all. I hope that you are all keeping warm and that you have a great week! Please email if you have any questions or comments. Welcome back! I hope that your break was as relaxing and wonderful as mine was! I love the beginning of a new year. Students can commit themselves to doing their best work for the 2nd half of the year, and finish strong. I've got some fun lessons and activities planned in the next few weeks, so we'll be getting right back to work. :) In math, we will be taking the chapter 6 test (unless a student completed the pre-test with 90% or higher) after a little review this week. On the pre-test, many students struggled with the multi-step operations word problems, so I'll be focusing on that in the review. The 2nd math benchmark of the year (on chapters 4-6) must be completed by 1/16, so we'll be working on a spiral review this week and take the benchmark on Monday. Please make sure that your student is able to do the homework they bring home so they can retain the review material. :) We finished the first language arts book before the break, so it'll be fun to recognize that accomplishment and hand out new books this week! According to our Year Long Plan, we will be doing our Fountas and Pinnell mid-year testing this week. This data will be available for our Winter Student-Led Conferences, so we'll be able to see the growth that has been achieved over the past few months. This week is an interactive review week for Unit 3, weeks 1-5. We will be reviewing action and linking verbs, homophones, main and helping verbs, subject-verb agreement, possessives, and irregular verbs. Because of the review, there will be no spelling list or test on Friday. We will still be doing Lexia this week. Speaking of Lexia, I'm excited to announce that Calli Singer and Taegen Edvalson have finished all of the available levels in Lexia (eighteen total). Congratulations!! I'm looking forward to lots of progress with Lexia in the coming months! Please emphasize this at home. Reading and comprehension scores are improving, so keep it up. One last thing, before the break, I asked students to begin reading a fantasy novel that is at least 100 pages. Here is the link on this website that details the project associated with this book report. In Utah History, we will continue our study of the 5 main Native American Tribes. We will also be practicing for the Great Utahn Award. This will be the last week of Mrs. Groendyke's science rotations, so make sure that your student is all caught up on any missing assignments. Students can also expect an end-of-term test. In term 3, they'll be working on weather and the water cycle with Mrs. Meredith. Please check the "Coming Up" page to see what'll be happening over the next 8 weeks. PLEASE NOTE THAT WE WILL BE TAKING A FIELD TRIP NEXT WEDNESDAY, 1/15.
