I was out with a cold yesterday, so I'm sorry this is a day overdue.
Language Arts- This week we will be doing a unit review in language arts, so we will not be doing our regular spelling and vocabulary words. We will still be doing Lexia, so please make sure that your student completes all the minutes that have been assigned by Friday. Math- We are deep in long division. Most of my class is doing quite well. There are a few students who need some help, so you may want to have your student demonstrate a few division problems on their homework tonight, just to make sure that they are clear on the concept. Science- We watched a few of the Newton's Laws videos today. So far they have been fantastic! I am thrilled to see the deep understanding that the students are exhibiting. Utah History- We are continuing our study of the 5 Utah Native American tribes. That's it for the week. I wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Hello and welcome to a new week. We have lots to pack into the next two weeks, so I'll jump right in.
Math- We started chapter 6 last week. We are doing simple division, but the algorithm can be tough because it's the first time most of these kids have divided in this new way. I have taught the students a song to outline the steps, so don't be surprised if you hear them sing the steps as they work through their math problems. This can be a frustrating time for students if they are unfamiliar with their basic multiplication and division facts, so keep going with the Reflex work! Language Arts- We started another expository text about a professional storm chaser. Expository texts are some of my favorites because they are non-fiction, they include tables and pictures, and special graphics. We will be revisiting cause and effect in literature, and we will also be working on verb tenses. The spelling words for most of the students are compound words, so it will be fairly easy if they students focus on each word as two smaller words. Many of my students have more Lexia minutes. Please make sure that your students are doing their 20 minutes of Lexia/SpellingCity/reading each day. Science- As a final project/test for our Newton's Laws unit, I would like for each student to choose one of the 3 laws, and come up with some way to act out or depict the law they have chosen on a short video which will be shared with me. I will give each student a worksheet that describes the assignment and what is expected. Utah History- This week, we will focus specifically on the Navajo Nation, which is located in the lower part of the Colorado Plateau. We will be starting a project where we will learn about the colors used symbolically in Navajo culture. That's it for the week. I hope it's a great week for you. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Thanks!!! Hello! I hope that your Thanksgiving holiday was wonderful and relaxing. Please read through to the end for a special request. I'll jump right in. Math- We are finishing ch. 5 and will have our math test tomorrow. I have promised the class a "Free Friday" hour if we average 85% or higher. I'm looking forward to the results. This week we will begin with simple division, and will move into long division. Historically, this has been a tough concept for students to get, but I have a lot of confidence in the group. If you can spend some time working on the algorithm with your student, it'll come that much more quickly! Language Arts- This week's story selection is "How Night Came from the Sea". The genre is myth, and we will will be exploring mythology from Africa and other cultures. We will be writing mini myths, and we will also practice visualizing while reading as well as seeing things from different characters' points of view. The new spelling lists and vocabulary word activities are on Spelling City, so make sure you make use of the resource. Also, many students' Lexia minutes have increased, so if that applies to your child, please make sure that they are doing extra minutes at home to ensure that all class minutes are completed. Science- We will have one more week on Newton's 3rd law, then a review of all three laws and a special assignment where students will make a video at home that illustrates an example of one of Newton's laws. More about that coming. Utah History- We will embark on a study of Utah's 5 Native American Tribes. We have been singing about these indigenous tribes since the beginning of the year, so it will be nice to learn more about each tribe. I have a request. We will be doing a special winter art project. Will you please send an 11x14 canvas with your student by December 13th? This is one of my favorite projects! Thanks!!! One last thing, I will be out of the classroom tomorrow as I will be attending a funeral in St. George. Mrs. Shayna Swiss will be subbing. If there are any questions or concerns, please feel free to email or Dojo me. Thanks!!! |
