Welcome back! I hope that your break was as relaxing and wonderful as mine was! I love the beginning of a new year. Students can commit themselves to doing their best work for the 2nd half of the year, and finish strong. I've got some fun lessons and activities planned in the next few weeks, so we'll be getting right back to work. :) In math, we will be taking the chapter 6 test (unless a student completed the pre-test with 90% or higher) after a little review this week. On the pre-test, many students struggled with the multi-step operations word problems, so I'll be focusing on that in the review. The 2nd math benchmark of the year (on chapters 4-6) must be completed by 1/16, so we'll be working on a spiral review this week and take the benchmark on Monday. Please make sure that your student is able to do the homework they bring home so they can retain the review material. :) We finished the first language arts book before the break, so it'll be fun to recognize that accomplishment and hand out new books this week! According to our Year Long Plan, we will be doing our Fountas and Pinnell mid-year testing this week. This data will be available for our Winter Student-Led Conferences, so we'll be able to see the growth that has been achieved over the past few months. This week is an interactive review week for Unit 3, weeks 1-5. We will be reviewing action and linking verbs, homophones, main and helping verbs, subject-verb agreement, possessives, and irregular verbs. Because of the review, there will be no spelling list or test on Friday. We will still be doing Lexia this week. Speaking of Lexia, I'm excited to announce that Calli Singer and Taegen Edvalson have finished all of the available levels in Lexia (eighteen total). Congratulations!! I'm looking forward to lots of progress with Lexia in the coming months! Please emphasize this at home. Reading and comprehension scores are improving, so keep it up. One last thing, before the break, I asked students to begin reading a fantasy novel that is at least 100 pages. Here is the link on this website that details the project associated with this book report. In Utah History, we will continue our study of the 5 main Native American Tribes. We will also be practicing for the Great Utahn Award. This will be the last week of Mrs. Groendyke's science rotations, so make sure that your student is all caught up on any missing assignments. Students can also expect an end-of-term test. In term 3, they'll be working on weather and the water cycle with Mrs. Meredith. Please check the "Coming Up" page to see what'll be happening over the next 8 weeks. PLEASE NOTE THAT WE WILL BE TAKING A FIELD TRIP NEXT WEDNESDAY, 1/15.
